This article is a part of a series of interviews that Entrepreneur magazine did with Seth Godin, marketing guru, about some of the lessons that he has learned in business and that are presented in his upcoming book.  One of the quotes that stood out to me from the article was:

“Fear of shame is a powerful tool to modify behavior, and those in power have been using it for years. They want to be able to change us by delivering shame and we’ve been taught to listen it I, believe it, and swallow it.

It’s fine to acknowledge that there are those who will seek to shame you. But that doesn’t mean you have to accept what’s given. We don’t work for the applause, and we’d be foolish to read the anonymous comments on Amazon or the tweets coming from the back of the room. That attempt to quiet you down and make you conform doesn’t belong to you unless you want it to.”

We are in control of how we react to criticism and rejection.  It is important to be able to learn how to manage the feedback that we receive and seek to unify that with the underlying motivation that you had in the first place.  Remember why you are doing what you are doing.  Don’t let people who do not understand or care about that dictate how you are going to act.

Odds are, you are using social media.  The question though, is are you using social media effectively?  There is a lot of noise out there and it can often be difficult to filter to between what is real and useful and what is not.  In order to offer some guidance, TJ McCue, presents some of the things that successful people do on social media in this article for Forbes.  The list is very comprehensive and includes insights from some great social media thought leaders.  Here is a little teaser:

I find it laughable that CEOs join social networks only to post about their companies. There are , no doubt, some high profile CEOs that people follow regardless, but most knowledgeable executives understand you have to get personal. Who will bail out Detroit?
 

There is no way around it.  Detroit is in trouble.  Numerous factors have led to it, but what are the things that need to be done in order to be able to assist the city in getting its feet back on the ground?  Here is an interesting video from CNN Money that discusses just that:

Personally, I think there are three things that any municipality can do to stay solvent. 1) Play to your strengths, 2) encourage innovation, and 3) using the community to provide a great quality of life.  What do you think would help cities like Detroit?
